Tongue Weight Scale Details

Bathroom scale tongue weight lever beam diagram

The diagram above comes out of the Draw-Tite Hitch Owner's Guide. Using a high-capacity bathroom scale and a simple beam lever setup, you can measure trailer tongue weights up to 900 pounds. Construction and usage are pretty straightforward. Alternatively, you can use a dedicated trailer tongue weight scale for direct readings under the coupler.

Be sure the lumber you use is capable of supporting the full trailer tongue weight (such as a 4x4 beam), that the trailer is parked on level ground, and that the wheels are securely locked with heavy-duty wheel chocks before attempting to weigh the tongue. Also ensure your scale is rated for at least 250 to 300 pounds capacity. With this 3:1 beam ratio setup, you can accurately measure 3 times the scale reading, which covers most travel trailers up to 28 feet in length.
